Council approves City's Universal Access Policy

Council approved the City’s Universal Access Policy at its meeting on Wednesday, 28 May 2025. The City's Urban Mobility Directorate is excited about the possibilities the policy offers in removing barriers and working towards the accessible transport system envisioned.
This policy aims to address accessibility challenges faced by minors, the aged, pregnant women, people living with disabilities, passengers with bags or luggage and to improve security for all users.
‘We are committed to keeping Cape Town moving and improving accessibility to Cape Town's transport system for the most vulnerable in our communities is key to this commitment. Public transport connects people to social and economic opportunities and needs to be accessible to all residents. Our infrastructure therefore needs to enable independent travel by passengers who depend on universal access. We would like to thank all residents and stakeholders who contributed to the draft strategy during the public participation process held in November 2024,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The Universal Access Policy will guide our teams who deal with the various components of the travel chain to improve accessibility. Upgrades to transport infrastructure and public transport facilities and services that the City has direct control over will be designed and constructed in a consistent manner City-wide. Over the long term, this will enable persons with disabilities to navigate the City with more ease.
